    National Rural Drinking Water Programme

    The National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) was launched by the Government of India in 2009 under the Ministry of Jal Shakti (earlier Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation). The programme aims to provide safe and adequate drinking water to the rural population in a sustainable manner.

    Objectives:

    • Ensure provision of safe and adequate drinking water to all rural households.
    • Promote sustainability of water sources and systems.
    • Encourage community participation and decentralized planning.

    Key Components of NRDWP:

    Coverage:

    • Focus on providing potable water to habitations without adequate supply.
    • Priority to areas with water quality issues and difficult terrain.
    • 193 water supply schemes were constructed by Swajal between 2014 and 2016 under this component, covering 120 habitations, and handed over to the Gram Panchayats for operation and maintenance (O&M).

    Water Quality:

    • Address issues related to contamination from fluoride, arsenic, iron, nitrate, and salinity.
    • Set up water testing laboratories and water purification units.

    Sustainability:

    • Promote water conservation, recharge, and management practices.
    • Create infrastructure like check dams and rainwater harvesting systems.

    Operation and Maintenance (O&M):

    • Ensure regular maintenance of water supply systems.
    • Involve Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and local communities in system upkeep.

    Support Activities:

    • Training, IEC (Information, Education & Communication), and capacity building for stakeholders.
    • Promote awareness and behavioural change in water usage.

    Monitoring and Surveillance:

    • Set up systems for regular monitoring of water quality and supply.
    • Use of online tools and databases for tracking progress.
