A society named “State Water and Sanitation Mission, Uttarakhand Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Mission (Swajal) Project” was registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, on March 5, 2001, for the management of the Swajal Project in the state of Uttarakhand. This society was formed under the Department of Drinking Water Supply, Government of Uttarakhand.
The society has its registered office in Dehradun and is referred to as the Project Management Unit (PMU), Swajal. It has thirteen District Project Management Units (DPMUs) located in Almora, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Champawat, Dehradun, Haridwar, Bhimtal (Nainital), Srinagar (Pauri), Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag, Tehri, Udham Singh Nagar, and Uttarkashi. These DPMUs manage the affairs of the society within their respective jurisdictions across all thirteen districts.
